Navaratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Durga, the mother goddess who also represents power. The word Navaratri means 'nine nights' in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. Navratri is also known as Durga Puja.  It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.  During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshiped. During this period Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati are worshiped as three different manifestations of Shakti, or cosmic energy.

In 2015 Navratri, Durga Pooja is celebrating from 13 to 22 October 2015. The nine nights Hindu Festival of the worship of Goddess Durga.


The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or "Dussehra" (also spelled Dasera). Navaratri is an important major festival and is celebrated all over India and Nepal. Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated twenty days after Dasera. Though there are total five types of Navaratri that come in a year, but Sharad Navaratri is the most popular one. Hence, the term Navaratri is being used for Sharada Navaratri here.
ഹൈന്ദവരുടെ ആരാധനയുടേയും നൃത്തത്തിന്റേയും ഒരു ഉത്സവമാണ് നവരാത്രി. ഒൻപത് രാത്രികൾ എന്നാണ് ഈ സംസ്കൃത പദത്തിന്റെ അർത്ഥം. ഒൻപത് രാത്രിയും പത്ത് പകലും നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ശക്തിയുടെ ഒൻപത് രൂപങ്ങളെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. നവരാത്രി ദിവസങ്ങളിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ മൂന്ന് ദിവസം ദേവിയെ പാർവ്വതിയായും അടുത്ത മൂന്ന് ദിവസം ലക്ഷ്മിയായും അവസാനത്തെ മൂന്ന് ദിവസം സരസ്വതിയായും സങ്കൽപ്പിച്ച് പൂജ നടത്തുന്നു.

Navaratri is celebrated four times a year. They are Vasanta Navaratri, Ashadha Navaratri, the Sharad Navaratri, the Paush/Magha Navaratri and the Magha Navaratri. Of these, the Sharad Navaratri of the month of Puratashi and the Vasanta Navaratri of the Vasanta kala are the most important.Other two are observed only by shaktas only.

Vasanta Navaratri: Vasanta Navaratri, it's nine days are dedicated to the nine forms of Shakti (Mother Goddess) in the month of Chaitra (March–April) and is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) of Chaitra. The beginning of this Navaratri also marks the start of the new year as per the Hindu mythological lunar calendar (Vikrami Samvat).
വസന്ത നവരാത്രി: വേനലിന്റെ ആരംഭമായ വസന്ത ഋതുവിലാണ്(മാർച്ച്-ഏപ്രിൽ) വസന്ത നവരാത്രി ഉത്സവം. വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിലാണ് ഇത് ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.

It is observed during the Ashadha Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon). This is mostly observed by shaktas only
അശാത നവരാത്രി: ജൂലൈ-ഓഗസ്റ്റ് മാസങ്ങളിലാണ് അശാത നവരാത്രി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. വരാഹിയുടെ ഉപാസകന്മാർക്ക് അഥവാ അനുയായികൾക്ക് വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതാണ് ഈ അഘോഷം. ദേവി മാഹാത്മ്യത്തിലെ ഏഴ് മാതൃകമാരിൽ ഒരാളാണ് വരാഹി. ഹിമാചൽ പ്രദേശിൽ ഗുഹ്യ നവരാത്രി എന്നാണിതിന് പേര്.
Sharad Navaratri: This is the most important of the Navaratris. It is simply called Maha Navaratri (the Great Navaratri) and is celebrated in the 'pratipada' (first day) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashvin. Also known as Sharad Navaratri, as it is celebrated during Sharad (beginning of winter, September–October).
ശരത് നവരാത്രി : ശൈത്യത്തിന്റെ ആരംഭമായ ശരത് ഋതുവിലാണ് (സെപ്റ്റംബർ‌-ഒക്ടോബർ) ശരത് നവരാത്രി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. മഹാ ശിവരാത്രി എന്നും പേരുണ്ട്. ദുർഗാ ദേവി മഹിഷാസുരനെ വധിച്ചതിന്റെ ഓർമയിക്കാണ് ഇത് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മിക്ക ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും കിഴക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിലും തെക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിലുമാണ് ഇതിന് കൂടുതൽ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളത്. വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ചിലർ ബന്ദാസുര വധത്തിന്റെ ഓർമയിലാണ് ശരത് നവരാത്രി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്.
Pausha Navaratri: Paush Navaratri is observed during the Pausha Shukla Paksha, the waxing phase of moon, in the month of December–January.
Magha Navaratri: The Magha Navaratri is also a kind of Gupta Navaratri. The waxing phase of moon in January–February marks the beginning of Magha Navaratri.
In Kerala and in some parts of Karnataka three days: Ashtami, Navami, and Vijaya Dashami of Sharad Navarathri are celebrated as Sarasvati Puja in which books are worshiped. The books are placed for Puja on the Ashtami day in own houses, traditional nursery schools, or in temples. 

On Vijaya Dashami day, the books are ceremoniously taken out for reading and writing after worshiping Sarasvati. Vijaya Dashami day is considered auspicious for initiating the children into writing and reading, which is called Vidyarambham. Tens of thousands of children are initiated into the world of letters on this day in Kerala.

The Nine Forms Of Goddess Durga 

Depending on the region, different forms of the Goddess Durga are worshipped. The forms are : Durga - The invincible
Bhadrakali - The auspicious and fortunate
Amba or Jagdamba - Mother of the universe
Annapoorna - the giver of food
Sarvamangala - the giver of joy all around
Bhairavi - The terrifying
Chandika - The violent
Lalita - The beautiful
Bhavani - The giver of life
Mookambika - The one who listens

Navratri Rituals 

The Sharad Navratri commences on the first day (pratipada) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashvin. The festival is celebrated for nine nights once every year during the beginning of October, although as the dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar, the festival may be held for a day more or a day less. 

Navaratri is celebrated in different ways throughout India. In North India, all three Navaratris are celebrated with much fervor by fasting on all nine days and worshiping the Mother Goddess in her different forms. The Chaitra Navaratri culminates in Ram Navami and the Sharad Navaratri culminates in Durga Puja and Dussehra. The Dussehra of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh is particularly famous in the North. Navaratri festival in Gujarat is one of the main festivals. Garba is a dance which people perform on all nine nights, after the Durga Pooja, in groups accompanied by live orchestra or devotional songs. 

The last four days of Sharad Navaratri take on a particularly dramatic form in the state of West Bengal in eastern India where they are celebrated as Durga Puja. This is the biggest festival of the year in this state. Exquisitely crafted and decorated life-size clay idols of the Goddess Durga depicting her slaying the demon Mahishasura are set up in temples and other places. These idols are then worshiped for five days and immersed in the river on the fifth day. 

ദുർഗ്ഗാഷ്ടമി: ഈ ദിവസത്തെ സായാഹ്നത്തിലാണ് പൂജ വയ്ക്കുന്നത്.

മഹാനവമി: പൂജാവൈപ്പിന്റെ രണ്ടാം ദിനമാണിത്.

വിജയദശമി: കന്നി വെളുത്തപക്ഷത്തിലെ ദശമി - നവമി രാത്രിയുടെ അവസാനത്തിൽ വിജയദശമിയായി ആചരിക്കുകയും ആഘോഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. വിജയസൂചകമായ ഈ പുണ്യദിനം ക്ഷത്രിയർ പ്രധാനമായി കരുതുന്നു.
