Nic Wallenda crossed over Niagara Falls
Nic Wallenda, 33 year old man, crossed over Niagara Falls in June 2012. It was the first time that anyone had crossed right over the top of the falls. Wallenda battled high winds, and a huge mist that came from the water crashing below him. A crowd of tens of thousands of people packed onto the roadway by the falls, some waiting more than 12 hours to watch the historic performance and they erupted with cheers as Wallenda ran the last few steps to the safety of the platform anchored in Canadian turf.
“The most amazing part was when he was on the line and he was waving at the people,” said eight-year-old William Clements. The boy, who came with his family from Dresden, Ont., jumped up and down with excitement as Wallenda knelt down on the wire toward the finish, took a hand off his balance bar and waved.
Wallenda said the other big distraction was a producer from ABC television talking to him in an earpiece telling him to slow down. Placing one steady foot in front of the other, trying not to get distracted by the raging waters below, Wallenda was “in the zone,” he said. That is, until the ABC producer had a request.
“Actually, I had a producer in my ear saying, ‘You know what, you
need to slow down a little,’” Wallenda said later. “I was like, ‘I don’t
want to slow down. I want to get across to the other side.’”
“I’m so blessed to be in the position I am, to be the first person to be right here and to be the first person in the world who will ever be right here.”
“I’m so blessed to be in the position I am, to be the first person to be right here and to be the first person in the world who will ever be right here.”
ABC also made Wallenda wear a safety harness, which was the right move, the last thing you want to see on prime time television is someone falling to their death. “It’s breathtaking,” he said. “It was absolutely amazing to have that view.” “Normally I can focus on that cable underneath me, and as it moves underneath me I focus on that and my body follows it,” he added. “But there was no way to do that. If I looked down at the cable there was water moving everywhere, and if I looked up, there was heavy mist.”
