Thriketa Sixth Day of Onam Celebrations തൃക്കേട്ട ഓണ നാൾ
Thriketa, Thriketta, തൃക്കേട്ട, the sixth day of Onam Celebration, the public frenzy starts going on higher side. Most of the schools and public offices starts issuing holidays from this day onwards and people starts packing their bags to their native homes to celebrate the festival with their dear ones. The pookalam design will be very large by this time, with at least 5 to 6 new flowers types added to the original designs. On this day, no ritual is conducted in any major or minor temples and households.
കേരളത്തിന്റെ ദേശീയ ഉത്സവമെന്ന രീതിയിലാണ് ഗവണ്മെന്റ് ഓണം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഔദ്യോഗികതലത്തിലും മറ്റ് പൊതുവേദികളിലും മതനിരപേക്ഷതയുടെ ആഘോഷമെന്ന രീതിയിലുള്ള ഓണാഘോഷ പരിപാടികള് സംഘടിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കേരളത്തിനു പുറത്തുള്ള മലയാളികള് തിരിച്ചുവന്നു തുടങ്ങുന്നു.
A feeling of joy and jubilation can be felt amongst the people of Kerala at this time. Cultural programmes and social gatherings are organised by various cultural societies all over the state. People of all religions caste and creed participate in these events as the festival of Onam has come to be seen as a secular festival. Government of India too celebrates Onam as the National Festival of Kerala.
From Thriketa days onwards people staying away from their families are start their journey to their home / Tharavadu to rejoin with their family Onam. It is the time for family get together and nobody likes to be away from family and dear ones. Joys of festivities doubles in the company of family members and close friends and their villagers.
More flowers are added in order to give it a new looks and design by the women folks, youngsters and children on the exiting floral carpet. Most of the Malayali’s who are residing in other part of the state and abroad visit their native home in Kerala this days onwards for their family reunion. They will took special gifts and other items for giving to their family member and relatives.
We can witnessed the preparation for Thiruvonam in each and every household. On this days onwards, most of the schools, colleges and university along with the state government offices are declared holidays for Onam celebration.
Onam Greetings
People are eagerly expecting the day of Thiruvonam and their friends and relatives from other part of the country and abroad on most of the household. The head of the family member will give permission to all the family members to participate and air their views and suggestions in order to improve the Onam festival.
How to make Ona Pookalam
On Onam days most of the Malayaless will make Pookalam on their own houses, cultural associations halls, schools and college auditoriums, Government Offices, etc. For making a Pookalam, first they will clean the floor to wiped out all the dust. Then, cow dung is spread over the entire area where the Pookalam is to be made. Once the cow dung is evenly spread, motifs on it are made using the hairline bamboo sticks or any pin like material.
Now a days Pookalam those who are living in Flats, Offices, Educational Institutions they are usually preparing Pookalam on the tiles Flore after cleaning it. Generally, the Pookalam is made in ten rings, each representing a ‘God’.
The flowers are then filled into the pattern made on the cowndung. Flowers that are commonly used in Pookalam include Thumba, Kakka Poovu, Thechipoovu, Mukkutti, Chemparathy, Aripoo or Konginipoo , Hanuman Kireedom and Chethi . Of all these flowers, Thumba flowers are considered the best as they are small in size and glitter in the soft rays of the sun.
The design of the Pookolam can be simple or intricate depending upon the choice of the designer. It is generally made at the entrance or veranda of the home.
